MERCHANDISE AND NEWS FROM THE PIPE WORLD

Hacker Pens Sherlock Holmes Pipe Monograph

Renowned pipe book author and Smokeshop contributor Richard Carleton Hacker commemorates the 20th anniversary of his pipe writing with a limited edition dissertation entitled, "The Adventures of the Singular Pipes of Sherlock Holmes."

Only 500 copies of the six-panel, full color monograph have been published and it will not be reprinted. In his booklet, Hacker recounts the briar, cherrywood, and clay pipes Holmes smoked, and reveals how the calabash came to be associated erroneously with the legendary detective. Photographs taken by the writer-photographer depict many of Sherlock Holmes' original pipes, as well as some past and present commemorative collectibles.

The booklets are available for $6.50 each postpaid in the U.S. ($10 foreign) while supplies last. Send check or money order payable to: Richard Carleton Hacker, P.O. Box 634; Beverly Hills, CA 90213-0634.

Nat Sherman Debuts Pipe Tabac No. 536

Nat Sherman has introduced Tabac No. 536 Blend, an English blend of pipe tobaccos that was inspired by the golden age of pipes and comes from the company's long heritage of being a tobacconist.

A quintessential English blend, Tabac No. 536 is made up of exotic latakia, Turkish Yenidje, and Malhalla tobacco. It features a smooth and mellow blend with a spicy and rich taste, and rounds out Nat Sherman's selection of classic tobaccos. No. 536 is available in a 2 oz. round tin similar to Nat Sherman's other blends.

Armada Rolls Out Old Favorites, New Brand

Steven Johnson, who served as merchandise manager at Alfred Dunhill America's distribution center in Bethlehem, Pa. prior to its closure in 2003, is putting his own considerable industry knowledge back into action, having launched a new pipe distribution company, Armada LLC, based in Emmaus, Pa.

Armada has obtained the U.S. distribution rights to several pipe brands, including two that had been distributed by the now-defunct James B. Russell Co. of Upper Saddle River, N.J.

Don Carlos pipes are produced in Cagli, Italy by pipe maker Bruto Sordini, who runs the business with his wife, Rosario. Bruto, who learned the trade working for many top pipe makers in the Pesaro area, was a founding partner of Ser Jacopo pipes, but left that firm to launch Don Carlos.

Comoy pipes, founded in the late 1800s by Frenchman Henri Comoy, were first produced in Belgium and later in London. Today the brand is again London-made, produced by Cadogan, a British pipe making firm that itself dates to 1825.

In addition, Armada is distributing its own domestically-produced pipes under the Armada USA brand, and importing another Italian-made line, Marconi Italia.
