TOBACCO PRODUCTS AND INDUSTRY PROMOTIONS (cont.)

Torpedo Shape Joins Elogio Lineup

Elogio Cigars has added a new torpedo (6 x 54) shape in both natural Habano wrapper and maduro wrappers. The existing Consul (5 1/2 x 52) is also now available in a maduro wrapper. New hinge-lid cedar boxes have been designed for both sizes to better showcase the cigars, which are Nicaraguan puros, hand made in Estelí, Nicaragua. All of the tobaccos used are from the Estelí region.

Special wholesale pricing exists until the end of the year; torpedos are $55 per box and the Consul is $50 per box; shipping is free. The torpedo retails between $5.75 and $6.75 per stick and the Consul between $5.00 and $6.00.

Joya de Nicaragua Rolls Out Celebración

Following in the footsteps of its "big brother," the Joya de Nicaragua Anta-o, the new Joya de Nicaragua Celebración uses the same Cuban seed Habana filler and binder as the Anta-o, but then wraps it in a slightly lighter Habana criollo leaf. The result is a full-bodied smoke with balance and tons of flavor, according to its manufacturer.

The Celebración comes in five sizes: 6 1/4 x 52 Torpedo, $5.00 retail; 6 7/8 x 48 Churchill, $4.50 retail; 6 x 50 Toro, $4.25 retail; 4 1/2 x 52 Consul, $3.95 retail; and the 5 1/4 x 42 Corona, $3.75 retail.

Delectados debuts from Puros do Brasil

Puros do Brasil has launched a new line of blended premium cigars, Delectados. The new line, which joins the company's existing Caravelas brand, is made with smooth, aromatic Mata Fina and Mata Norte tobaccos grown in the Reconao region of Bahia, Brazil.

"With this new line we decided to add some drama and body to Caravelas," says Tarek Mourad, master blender at Puros do Brasil. "This is a cigar for a double-O agent."

Eduardo Isao, production manager for the Brazilian factory, adds, "The less expensive but potent Mata Norte allows us to produce in higher volume and offer a more affordable product." Perdomo Taps J.C. Pendergast for Edicion de Silvio Museum Humidor Retail Display

Tabacalera Perdomo, S.A., began shipping Edicion de Silvio Museum Humidor retail display units to qualified tobacconists in December.

The free-standing humidor and display case was co-designed and built by J. C. Pendergast, Inc. of Racine, Wi. exclusively for Tabacalera Perdomo's high-end Edicion de Silvio brand. The humidor "represents the finest in craftsmanship and climate control," says James Pendergast, owner of J.C. Pendergast, Inc. "There is no other unit like it in the industry today." J.C. Pendergast has been involved in custom fixturing and architectural millwork since the mid-1950's and is considered a foremost authority on humidification and cigar storage.

The humidor reflects the packaging design of the Edicion de Silvio cigar brand, with an exterior crafted of mahogany and an interior lined with natural Spanish cedar.

The display unit is split into two functional sections. The top "exhibit" section is sealed in glass, impervious to atmospheric elements, and is used to showcase an open Edicion de Silvio Spanish Galleon tobacco chest on a thatched wood shelf which rotates at a rate of two revolutions per minute. Filtered lighting safely highlights the displayed cigars. The bottom cigar pedestal section houses can accommodate up to three additional tobacco Edicion de Silvio chests and three gift boxes.

The display features a proprietary, fully-automatic humidification system with multi-level venting that ensures optimum humidity levels within the unit while also eradicating any suspended minerals and chlorine. A digital hygrometer is also included. Entry to the display is protected by solenoid locks controlled from a password-protected digital keypad.

Michael Argenti, vice president, expects up to 75 Edicion de Silvio Museum Humidors to be shipped this year to the nation's most prominent retailers.

Two New Tubos Join Fonseca Line

S.A.G. Imports has introduced two new tubes to the Fonseca cigar line. "We have had many request from our customers for tubes in the Churchill size," says Brad Weinfeld, national sales manager, S.A.G. Imports. "Tubes have long been great sellers for golfers and off-premise sales."

The Fonseca Churchill Tubo, from the classic and best-selling Fonseca line, measures 7 x 48. It becomes the second tube in the Fonseca line and is packaged in the classic gold and red tubing.

The Fonseca Sun Grown Cedar #5 from the more full-bodied sungrown line, is also a 7 x 48 and that line's first tubo. Its tube is a painted crimson wood grain and the cigar maintains its unique individual cedar wrap.

The cigars are manufactured in the Dominican Republic at the Matasa factory by master blender Manuel Quesada.
